NPD: MAG, Bayonetta Make January Top 20

Sales tracker releases additional US market data for January, revealing how a number of new IPs fared.

The NPD Group has revealed the top 20 selling console games in the US during January, showing how a number of new IPs performed at retail.

While the market research firm previously distributed a list of the top ten sellers for the month - new releases Mass Effect 2, Army Of Two: The 40th Day and Darksiders, all for Xbox 360, placed second, eighth and tenth respectively – a number of January releases failed to make the cut.

According to data provided to Gamasutra, four more January releases cracked the top 20. The PS3 version of Army Of Two: The 40th Day placed at number 11, PS3 exclusive MAG debuted at 13, Darksiders for PS3 was at 14, and Bayonetta for Xbox 360 at 17.

Wii titles took seven of the top 20 places, while eight of the games to make the list were published by Nintendo.

Absent from the top 20 were Capcom’s Dark Void, which launched in the US on January 19, and No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle, which sold less than 30,000 units during its first week of availability according to EEDAR, having launched on January 26.

The NPD Group didn’t release sales data for games outside of the top ten. We’ve requested sales data for a number of titles, including Bayonetta, Dark Void and MAG.
