Infinity Ward has confirmed that the first downloadable content for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is set for release on March 30.
The content will be a timed exclusive on Xbox 360, releasing on PS3 and PC “at a -- yet to be announced -- later date”, according to the developer’s community manager, Robert Bowling.
“Mapathy (n.) [map-uh-thee] (often expressed as, “How the hell did you know I was there?!”) is a state of indifference to the same old maps one has been playing for the last several months,” Infinity Ward says. “The Mapathetic individual no longer derives pleasure from blowing up people hiding in the cockpit or on top of the crane. More than 20 million people may be at risk for Mapathy.”
While the DLC wasn’t detailed, supposed screenshots and a video of the upcoming map pack appeared on the internet earlier this week. Referred to as the 'Stimulus Package', it is reportedly set to include five maps - Crash, Overgrown, Complex, Compact and Storm. The first pair of maps appeared in 2007’s Modern Warfare.
Call Of Duty DLC has been lucrative for Activision in previous years. DLC for Modern Warfare 2’s predecessor, the Treyarch developed Call Of Duty: World At War, had sold over 6.5 million units as of August 2009. “Beyond direct accretive revenue generation, this extends our shelf life, helping to insulate us from the used game market and in turn allowing us to hold pricing longer,” Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith said last year.
Infinity Ward’s Bowling also said this week that Modern Warfare 2 has surpassed 25 million unique players across all platforms since launching in November 2009.
