Every week, the Edge Games Index, produced in association with Brandwatch, rates games according to the volume of positive and negative buzz they're inspiring on the web.

Each chart allows you to rank the list by the overall quantity of buzz about each title, by the quantity of positive or negative buzz, and by the percentage of positive or negative buzz. To explain the numbers you’ll see on the charts, the number alongside the volume of responses represents the absolute number of mentions the game in question has had, while the ‘last week’ column represents a game’s position in relation to the others on the chart seven days ago.

The data is compiled by brand intelligence specialist Brandwatch. To find out how its system works, see our explanation.

UK Chart February 1

After weeks as the most talked-about game of the UK top selling games, Modern Warfare 2 has finally been superseded. Naturally, the UK's top seller, Mass Effect 2, was the game to do it, taking 18,093 total mentions compared to MW2's 12,045. Not that MW2 has taken a particularly heavy hit to the volume of buzz it has inspired, only dropping from last week's 13,417.

To say the top two games are dominating this week's chart would be an understatement. Third place MAG claims just 3346 mentions. In terms of the rest of the chart, the figures and games are pretty much the same as last week's.

Similar, too, is Army Of Two: The 40th Day's strong hold over positive feedback, with it comprising 59 per cent of its total. Next most proportionally popular is MAG, with 55 per cent of its mentions positive, while half of Mass Effect 2's is favourable. 13 per cent, however, is negative, putting the game at the upper end of the scale this week, but below Just Dance's 14 per cent.

Mass Effect 2's achievement in topping Modern Warfare 2, however, is to be admired. But whether a strong DLC campaign can maintain its position in the consciousness of internet discourse compared to the long term appeal of MW2's multiplayer remains to be seen.

Most Popular Games

This week we thought we'd also present the ten games attracting the most positive feedback that Brandwatch is currently registering, a chart we'll feature every month. Please note that Mass Effect 2 and Modern Warfare 2's figures are slightly different to those in their appearances in the UK chart. This is due to the Most Popular chart being generated a few hours afterwards.

The top two entries are also currently top selling, as you might expect. And look out for BioShock 2, which is on the brink of release and already causing no small amount of buzz. Less predictable is Fallout 3's longevity as one of the most talked-about games. It's also claiming the most positive feedback at 55 per cent. Least positively and almost most negatively discussed game is World Of Warcraft, with 43 per cent and 13 per cent respectively. You can't be huge and not be controversial, clearly. And Runescape, the free-to-play MMOG, proves its generally unsung popularity by appearing on the list, considering all other games here get far more press.

We'll see next month how the games tend to change over time.

I'm sure BioWare's breaking out the champagne over winning the 'Edge Games Index.'

Do these figures reflect what you've read around the web?

No.

That's only because, outside of Edge, you only read PS3 fanboy sites.

For me, those figures do pretty much reflect what I'm seeing around the web.

I wouldn't know a 'PS3 fanboy site' if it came up and stole my shoes.
